Home | Local | Change in "Wobbler" Offenses Could Send More Criminals to County Jail

More concern is coming from local law enforcement about a cost cutting move suggested by the Governor on certain wobbler sentences.  Those are crimes that can be charged as either a felony or a misdemeanor. Governor Schwarzengger has proposed the reduction of 73 different crimes from felonies to crimes that would put suspects in the county jail, instead of state prison. Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal says the Governor is just transferring the problem, this proposal will impact the local jails in each county.

“Now with these recommended changes, they’ll be sent to our local facilities. Basically what the state’s doing is passing the buck. They’re going to save money, but they’re going to put a greater burden on local corrections by increasing the jail population, especially on a system that already has already prisoners in the system.”

People convicted of auto theft, burglary and drug offenses would be placed in the local jails for a maximum of one year. This move would save state dollars and increase county costs. This proposal would be on   top of releasing thousands of nonviolent offenders. and turning over illegal alien criminals for deportation.
