Work is continuing on the Mural project in downtown Grass Valley. Artist John Pugh told KNCO news today that work on the mural, that will be installed on the back and side wall of the Del Oro Theatre, is on schedule and he will be back in town on Sunday.
“Most of the mural is complete and I am working on it right now in my studio. The heat isn’t really holding up the process, it’s just perhaps changing the order in which it’s completed.”
Pugh has created the mural to depict the merging of Nevada County's Mining legacy with the beautry and renewal of the waters of the South Yuba River. He says people will want to look at the mural during different times of the day because the paint and products he is using will change the design.
“We actually have a few types of paint. The company that provides the paint for me- they’re known as iridescent and they’re also called interference colors, which means that they actually change colors and shimmer depending on which way you’re looking at it and which way the sun’s bouncing off of it.”
Pugh says the old mural that depicted the red hart of the gold country was done in oils that eventually broke down...he says the new-age products he is using on the new mural should make it last 100 years or more and be virtually graffiti proof. John Pugh says he doesn't mind a gallery if people want to come out and watch him work on the mural .
