A big rig hauling old tires caught fire on Interstate 80 westbound, just east of Colfax this morning around 8:15. The fire was so hot it burned the entire truck to the pavement in a blaze that lasted about 90 minutes. Gold Run CHP officer, Mike Pugh says the residue requires a hazardous materials clean up, Car's on interestate 80 are being detoured around the fire scene through Colfax on Rollins Lake Road. Trucks are being diverted from eastbound Interstate 80 onto highway 20 and through Nevada City and Grass Valley. "That's why you are seeing so many big rigs in your neck of the woods right now."
The detour will be in effect until about 5 o'clock this evening. Eastbound traffic on Interstate 80 does not seem to be effected. The truck that caught fire was owned by B.J. Transportation Inc. out of Waterloo Iowa. The Driver, who was not identified was out of Utah. No injuries were reported.
