The Nevada Irrigation District Board of Directors has delayed approval of the Environmental Impact Report on the proposed D-S Canal Flume replacement project. On Wednesday, the board postponed certification of the E-I-R after receiving a 75-page challenge to it from an Oakland law firm late Tuesday. N-I-D General Manager, Ron Nelson, says, at first glance, it does not appear there's anything new in the complaint.
“I think we’ve carefully reviewed those and tried to look at the alternatives and I think that we’re still of the opinion that the best thing in order to have a safe environment for our workers and to be able to provide water to our farmers is to still go ahead and replace the flumes.”
The N-I-D board will, once again, hold a public hearing on the Environmental Impact Report at its October seventh meeting. Nelson says the proposed project would replace the flumes with elevated pipeline to increase safety, capacity, fire resistance and reduce maintenance costs.
