Home | Local | The Gold Country Community Center is Looking for a new Site

The Gold Country Community Center had to move out of the Fairgrounds when their formerly-free building was going to cost $3,000 a month in rent.  The meals program for seniors was moved to Senior Apartments behind Safeway in the Brunswick Basin and activities were moved to the Love Builiding for two days a week.  The Board has a vision to bring all the Community Center Activities together at one site.  Beth Moore, President of the Board of Directors of the Gold Country Community Center says they may have found it at Grass Valley's Memorial Park, "At this point, we're in an exploratory discussion with some folks at Grass Valley, at the city, and talking about some collaborative uses for the old Memorial Building.  It's kind of the club house at Memorial Park." That building was originally built by the Empire mine association for the recreation of the miners...There's dry rot and electrical problems to name just a few of the repairs that would be needed.... But Grass Valley has a $100-thousand dollar grant available that could posibly be used on the building and the Community Center also has a $200 thousand dollar bequest available, "I don't want to create unrealistic expectations here for folks that this is a done signed deal.  There's no ink yet, but we're really feeling enthusiastic and eager to continue the exploratory process and see what my come of this."  Moore also wants to emphasise there would be no gaps in the senior meals nutrition program
